Cool Talk on getting started as an artist

Really enjoyed listening to this talk on getting noticed as an artist! I recommend listening to it!

Seal Boy experimentation:

Experimenting with more styles for SealBoy. Since the main character is focal, with his distinctive arms, which should somehow work in low poly, i decided to try to remake a younger version of the character in a variety of styles:

Triangular storyboards!

Triangles everywhere!

I am working with a very open brief on the mobile game project I am currently doing visual development art for - Sealboy - where I have the opportunity to freely experiment and define a distinctive art style. One of the styles, I got a permission to show, because it will definitely not be used for the game.

I knew I wanted a pseudo-polygonal style, where everything at least looked like it was entirely made of triangles. Since it was  style waaaaay out of my comfort zone I started off with a life-drawing session where I tried to apply that visual language:

Life Drawings:

The required character had to be based in Britain in the 1960's. So I continued working in my sketchbook, noting down ideas based on extensive historical references. I selected a few sketches that seemed to come together well and then I started working on them digitally aiming to use bright 60s colours and all shapes to be triangular.

HAMMER TIME!

Update! I got approved to do freelance work for Games Workshop!!!! Since I do not believe I can share my approved art test, I will share my failed art test :D As well as my process and what I learned from it. Hope it helps!

I started off with a bunch of thumbnails to find the right composition in the required format:

I wanted to achieve a painterly illustrative look, similarly to a bunch of Warhammer art I found around the Internets. So from that enlarged sketched above I just started painting. Something I had not done in  while. Just working on the image and 'discovering' the shapes and colours. You can see my step-by-step below:

Overall it was quite enjoyable working like this, though looking back at fact it wasn't approved means for me spontaneously painting is not the most reliable choice. But I advice anyone to just free- style-paint once in a while. Really fun. Though perhaps don't freestyle it when it matters so much! Composition. Anatomy. Really important.
