Imaginary City

At this stage it was pointed out to me that the city image would look better if the canvas was wider, hinting at an even larger space. I also have to fix the focal point. For the character there seems to be an anatomical problem with the arm.

Termite Exterminator Update!

I started the b-movie poster and posed the exterminator character. Then I thought about the overall composition. Earlier film posters seem to be simpler, emphasizing on the characters and the rest of the space is taken by a giant title. After that I cleaned up the image and applied base colours:

1950's Termite Exterminator!

Our new brief is to create a termite exterminator machine that would be set in the 1950's using the technology available then, and show its interaction with a character.

Normally when I have an idea to explore for a given task I feel I work better sketching out my ideas first and then doing a research to support my original idea. And this is how I approached this brief.  My first thought was ghostbusters, because they were inspired by termite exterminators, and my 2nd thought was Barbarella and any sort of old b-movie sci fi. I really want to create something like that - a b-movie poster from the 50's fighting space termites...

An experiment gone wrong ...  now the Moon is overpopulated with mutant termites and it is up to Rosilda to save the day!

Haha! I started with poster layouts and sketches just to start my thought process. Then I picked one option and sketched it up bigger so that I start thinking about the details:

Then I did some  exploratory detail sketches on how the character would work. The image below describes the idea of the backpack that would exterminate the termites to be very stylized, made from a hard material maybe metal or plastic, that shapes the body in a very idealistic way - kind of like the playboy club bunnies in the 60s. Still no references used there are meters and buttons and bulbs, and a gun that suspiciously looks like a hair dryer.

This here is a more technical drawing on how the character would look:

Next I experimented with colour variations:

I picked number 11 - the cream and red for the final piece.

City on stilts Population

I continued to develop how to population of the city on stilts would look. So I did outfit designs on 4 sheets divided by social status. Each sheet has 8 couples outfit options.

ARISTOCRATS:

Sheet one started my thought process. I thought that exploring the nobles first would let me find some distinctive look for the whole population, which would then be simplified for the various social circles. So at this stage I was more adventurous looking into both sci-fi and fantasy ideas. I settled on the direction of couple number 8 - I really liked that the metal reflects the structure of the stilts, suggesting pride of craftsmanship in their society. But I didn't like how European and familiar they look.

ARISTOCRATS - METAL:

So I  spend the next sheet developing various ideas that  would combine the sophistication of the structure of the city and something more oriental in order to create a definitive look. Number 1 seems to encompass those concepts most accurately.

MONKS:

A part of the brief indicates there is an order of warrior monks on the rich part of the city. The religious aspect might suggest they could look more old-fashioned compared to the nobility and they don't necessarily need to address their industry in their attire. Here are 8 very different male and  female versions:

POOR PEOPLE:

Gangs: In the brief there is a description on rivalling gangs. I have not yet defined how those gangs are differentiated from each other I just investigated their look and their tools. They all have shorter trousers which suggest that they don't really walk the most glamorous paths. Their faces are covered with their shawls to conceal their identities and they are equipped with either stolen weapons or old digging tools. I quite like the idea of them regularly trying to climb the city with hooks in order to steal. Number 4 even has a large magnet on his chest to climb more safely up the stilts of the city.

The 2nd row is the peaceful community, who don't cover their faces like the nobility, and some even have more ornaments suggesting a higher statute.

That was 64 figures! Phew!

Imaginary City

A day's workshop was to re-draw a pile of stuff that was set up in front of us as a city. We redrew aspects of that city 3 different times.  As homework we had to Photoshop those 3 pieces together, with the 3 separate layers being obvious:

Edit: City Update:

And Also we had to draw a character that would inhabit the city - so I drew a space wizard.  In order to fit with the city better I drew her with the same materials as I did the city. The character also had to be based on one of our like drawing sessions. Below you can see the life drawing I started from together with the design:
